Will You Be Watching?

The Grammy's are by far my favorite award show! Tonight is the big night, the show begins at 8pm on CBS. Will you be tuning in? What I really enjoy about the Grammy's compared to say the Oscars and the Emmy's is that there are performances. It's basically one long concert of all your favorite artists, what more could you ask for? It's boring to me to watch three hour award shows of crying, drunk celebrities rambling on thanking people we've never even heard of! Not to mention, I'm not a huge movie or TV watcher. So are you ready? I am!!! I'm not wishing the weekend away, but if the weekend has to come to an end, there is nothing better on a Sunday night then the Grammy's to distract me from having a case of the Monday's a day early.

Weekend Recap

We had a very eventful weekend and we are of course sad to see it go. Friday's weather was cold and rainy, so Thomas and I went to a local favorite for some comfort food; cheese fries and pizza. Let's get one thing straight, these cheese fries aren't just any cheese fries. I'm sure you are thinking fries with runny cheese dip poured over the fries that then turn soggy before you even get your hands on them. Not these cheese fries! The Whig's cheese fries go a little something like this: a large bowl full of fries with a variety of shredded cheeses melted on top with a side of ketchup and ranch. Can we say comfort food heaven?

Saturday night we attended a couples stock the bar shower for our friends Christi & Jake who are tying the knot this May! We had a fun time celebrating with them as well as fabulous time at the party with several of our friends who came in from out of town. Saturday night brought back memories of being in college and all of us being in the same place!

My camera was MIA all weekend, which is unfortunate since I really meant to take a picture of the gift we gave Christi & Jake. Before Christmas I found a cozy faux fur wine/liquor bag from Pottery Barn that I knew would be perfect for their shower especially since it was during the cold winter months and these napkins at a local boutique back home in Baltimore.

We filled the faux fur bag with a bottle of liquor and I wrapped the napkins in clean cellophane with a ribbon and used the tie from the faux fur bag to attach the napkins to the bag. I love giving gifts and I think the best gifts to give are the ones you want to keep for yourself!

An the icing on the cake was watching the Super Bowl with some close friends and seeing the Packers W-I-N!!!!!!!!

Super Bowl Sunday!

Are you ready for some football? I sure am! Game time is set for 6:38pm. I'm sure y'all can guess who I'm rooting for since I'm from Baltimore. Let's go Packers!!!!!!! Besides all the football shenanigans, I'm really looking forward to the commercials! I haven't watched any of the previews of the commercials this week when they were trying to spoil the fun on the morning talk shows. All I have to say is, I hope Betty White makes another appearance, I absolutely loved the Doritos commercial she was in last year!

I'm sure many of y'all will be going to Super Bowl parties tonight, so I thought I would share one of my favorite, yet so simple and easy dip recipes. You can make this dip ahead of time and then when you arrive at the party all you need to do is stick it in the oven for a few minutes to warm it and melt the cheese topping.

Chili Cheese Dip

Ingredients:

(1) 16oz. plain cream cheese
(1) regular can Hormel chili without beans
(1) smaller can of Castleburys hot dog chili
(1) 16oz. package of shredded cheese, cheddar or Mexican mix
(1) bag Tostitos or Fritos

Directions:

1.In a 9x13 baking dish spread the 16 oz of plain cream cheese. In a separate dish mix the two cans of chili together. Top the cream cheese with the mixture of chili. Top the entire dish with shredded cheese. Before serving bake at 400 degree until cheese is bubbly and melted, about 15-20 minutes. Serve with Tostitos or Fritos.

Thomas gave me this recipe last year when we were in need of an quick and easy appetizer to a Super Bowl party. The dip was very tasty and such a hit with all the guests!

Dinner & A Movie

Friday was a long day and I was tired after the work week that staying in that night and eating leftovers and watching a movie sounded like the perfect way to spend Friday night. Thomas was on board too, so we spent the night in eating dinner and watching a movie together.

Have you seen this?

If you haven't, rent it ASAP! I didn't know anything about this movie before we watched it, but it was a great movie and I highly recommend it. Plus it's a great movie to watch with a guy and I promise you will enjoy it too!

A Celebration & An Event to Kick Off to the Holiday Season

Wednesday was Thomas' birthday, I won't disclose his OLD age, but I will say he falls in the age bracket that is closer to 30 than to 20. Yes, I am laughing, but only because I can since I'm not in the same age bracket, yet. For everyone else, don't worry about getting old, I just like giving Thomas a hard time about becoming an "old man!"

Anyways, back to the birthday celebration! We went to dinner for his birthday, his choice of course, and he a good choice he made, The Oyster Bar! Oyster Bar is one of our favorite places, and November is a perfect month for oysters since the month ends in "r." What I love about the Oyster Bar is its laid back atmosphere (a long wooden rectangular high top bar with bar stools lines the restaurant and there is a trough in the middle where the guys shuck your oysters) and the exceptionally friendly staff who sucks your oysters for you. What could be better than enjoying oysters while watching someone else do the work? With our oysters we also ordered a pound of craw fish and Thomas ordered a cup of seafood gumbo and a side order of red potatoes, which I ended up help eating, oh well. And of course we couldn't stop there, we ordered another peck of oysters before calling it quits. The Oyster Bar's homemade cocktail sauce called "Mother Shucker's" is to die for and it's warm when they serve it to you, it's heavenly. The oysters were delicious and we had a great time together!

After dinner we had to have dessert to continue the celebration of course. Every year I've always made Thomas' a birthday cake, but this year I decided that wouldn't be a good idea since I knew we wouldn't be able to eat it all before it went to waste. So Cupcake to the rescue! During lunch on Wednesday I picked up two cupcakes, Red Velvet (one of Thomas' favorites) and Strawberry Cheesecake (one of the flavors of the day). We started with the Strawberry Cheesecake with the intentions of only eating one, but that didn't exactly work! So we ate the Red Velvet cupcake too and they both were excellent.

I don't have any pictures from the night because I couldn't think while trying to overcome my hunger pains, so you are just going to have to picture in your head the best oysters you've ever had and multiply it by 100 and then picture you favorite cupcake and imagine that's what we were enjoying, but better!

Fast forward with me now to last night. Every year part of Columbia's downtown known as the Vista, kicks off the holiday season with an event called, Vista Lights! Vista Lights is one of my favorite events in Columbia to celebrate the holidays. The city closes off several blocks of the main street that runs through the Vista so adults and children can walk freely in the street. Vista Light's is almost like a open house to kick off the holiday season with over 60 galleries, shops, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues open their doors for the evening to showcase holiday treasures. There are fire pits to roast marshmallows in the street, a bridal fashion show, lighting of the Christmas tree, lots of shops to see, and of course good food and drinks.

I am happy it was chilly this year because we been when it's been very, very windy and cold which was miserable and then we have also been when the weather has been so mild it was almost warm and that certainly doesn't make it feel like the holidays are near. So I would say this year was picture perfect! We sampled Blue Marlin's famous shrimp and grits which are unbelievably amazing, I had a glass of barbie wine while Thomas had a beer or two, watched the lighting of the Christmas tree, and we of course went in and out of all the galleries and shops while enjoying the entertainment in the street. We had an absolute blast and I'm sad it's over. Already looking forward to next year!

A Royal Wedding.

Let me start by saying, who knew the Royal Family was so good at keeping secrets? I was shocked to hear that Prince William and Kate Middleton were engaged back in October! At first I thought there was something fishy, like Prince William didn’t ask Kate’s Father until after he proposed and that was the reason they were waiting to announce it to the media. Thankfully, that was not the case. Why the wait, I’m not sure, may be so they could spend some time celebrating in private with family and friends? Whatever the case maybe, the news is out and there’s going to be a Royal Wedding within the next year, SQUEEE!

What an Experience! (Alt. Title: Redneck Weekend!)

Remember my post from Friday and how I was excited not to do anything over the weekend? Well that sure didn't happen, but I rather of had the weekend we did then stay at home!

Squee! Thomas and I were given tickets to the NASCAR Dollar General 300 Race in Charlotte on Friday night. This is something I have had on my bucket list for a while now, at least since I began living in the South. My Mom's response when I told her what we were doing Friday night was, "I didn't think that would be something you would be interested in." Well she's right. I'm really not at all interested in the sport of racing, but I am interested in experiencing the NASCAR environment. I just couldn't imagine what the track looks and feels like with cars going 170+ mph around and around.

Welcome race fans!

They race two weekends a year in Charlotte; May and October. Let's be honest here, we were treated like royalty. The tickets we were given were for the Speedway Club with reserved parking & seating and we were given a dress code to follow. Yes you read it correctly, a dress code! Our tickets were like going to an NFL Football game with box seats.

I think the start was my favorite part, but I will say the entire race was entertaining! I could never imagine watching 200+laps on TV but it's completely different being there. Oh and there were a couple of wrecks which made it even more exciting and I can say that because no one was hurt! Both of us had an absolute blast and would definitely go back!


Now fast forward to Sunday with me because honestly any Gamecock fan wants to forget Saturday. Sunday evening we went to the State Fair. I look forward to this day every year and Thomas does too. Last year we did a much better job of "eating our way through the fair", literally, but we didn't do too shabby this year either.

We started with fried mushrooms. Probably the best fried mushrooms ever.

Next Friske french fries, so tasty with lots of salt and vinegar I forgot to take a picture.

Main Course: Slice of Pizza for me.

Italian Sausage for Thomas.



Dessert: Fried Oreos. Absolutely postively the most delicious. Don't judge.

After finishing our main course we walked around the entire fair and saw the sights and saw some sights, literally!

Game 2: USC v. UGA

As I am sure you are all aware football season is well under way now! Two weekends ago the USC Gamecocks played the Georgia Bulldogs in Columbia . This is always a huge game for both schools and unfortunately for the Gamecocks it doesn’t always turn out the way we’d like it, but this year we came away with a WIN!

It has been tradition since junior year of college for all of us girls to go in on two tailgating spots for the football season. As you can imagine each year since we graduated the number of girls has dwindled down since many have moved away, but somehow we have managed to keep a steady group of people guys are now included to continue to renew our two tailgating spots year after year. Many who have moved away seem to return for a couple of the games throughout the season and the Georgia game is always one of those games!

Last weekend was a blast. I miss having all my girlfriends in the same city, not to mention 8 of us living together in one house with 6 others living in the house right next door. Does any one else feel the same? I would do anything to go back to college. I had the time of my life with those girls and I am thankful each of every day for my college experience and to have truly met my best friends.

Weekends when there is a football game and everyone comes back in to town makes it feel like we are back in college. The days leading up to the game we spend hours e-mailing back and forth deciding on food to make, what time to meet, who’s driving, who’s bring this and who’s bringing that and the entire weekend is a fun time no matter the out of the game. This year it happened to be a WIN and we couldn’t be more excited, can you tell?

No football tailgate is any good without an abundance of food to last the entire day and of course a variety of drinks. This past weekend the game was at 12 noon which made for a very early morning and an early evening. Since we all planned on tailgating from breakfast time on we decided some of would make breakfast foods while others made lunch/snack foods for the afternoon.

I always like bringing something salty and something sweet. For this game I made 150 chicken nuggets, which I think are a tailgating staple and chocolate peanut butter brownies. I will tell you the brownies didn’t make it because someone left them in the truck of his car, I won’t mention any names but I am sure you can guess by the pronoun used in this sentence who’s to blame! I think he did it on purpose so he could take all of them home for himself. Oh well, its okay I cheated this time anyways and made brownies out of box, oh wait that’s what I always do, but I usually add a Symphony candy bars to mix. Follow this recipe for Symphony Brownies, it is my favorite and always seems to be a big hit with the entire crowd. Well I guess in all reality the group doesn’t have anything to compare the Symphony Brownies to since the brownies I made last weekend never made it, did I mention that?

Besides forgetting the brownies not like anyone noticed, the day was a total blast even though we thought we might all pass out from the heat!

Goodness, can you believe it is almost the end of the September? I sure can't! Let me catch you up on what I've been up too...

I spent Labor Day weekend in Austin , TX visiting my good friend from college, Ellie!

Remember this post when I mentioned I was planning on visiting her sometime soon? Well, shortly after that visit, I booked my plane ticket! I thought what better weekend then a 3 day weekend which I turned in to a 4 day weekend by taking Friday off of work to go visit Ellie and see Austin . I was lucky enough to find a reasonably priced airline ticket to fly to Austin out of Columbia . For those of you who aren’t very familiar with Columbia , it is the Capital of SC however, we have struggled attracting airlines to Columbia . Which means it’s usually very costly and takes lots of stops to get to your final destination. Well thankfully that was not the case when flying to Austin because the drive to Charlotte is very boring.

Back to my wonderful trip! I arrived in Austin Friday afternoon, Ellie picked me up at the airport after work and we headed to meet some of her friends for happy hour at Dogwood. The bar had a great a great atmosphere and it was nice to meet her friends. We had dinner reservations down the street at a Mexican restaurant, Z'Tejas. We got to eat outside and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the restaurant while sipping on some strong margaritas and delicious corn bread and of course our main entrée. I was starving, what else is new, so I devoured my entire dinner and it was tasty! After dinner we enjoyed one more very strong cocktail before heading home. You can say it, we’re lame, but really Ellie had just started a new job earlier that week and we were exhausted. By midnight we were sound asleep!

Saturday morning we slept in just for a little bit and then woke up and headed right out to start our day. Our first stop was to an amazing coffee shop not far from Ellie’s house called Caffe Medici. I told Ellie to order me whatever she was having (as I did with many of the places she took me in Austin) and can I tell you this iced coffee was amazing. In all seriousness it was probably the best I’ve ever had.


We passed a farmer’s market on our way to brunch so of course we had to stop. Experiencing the farmer’s market made me miss living in Florence , Italy . Ellie and I studied abroad in Florence for a semester in college and loved every second of it. I would do anything to go back, I know Ellie would too! After touring the market, we were starving, so we headed right for Taverna for $1 Mimosas. Don’t judge, I’m on vacation. I ordered Belgium waffles with fresh fruit, they hit the spot and the raspberries, blueberries, were so fresh and sweet, they just melted in my mouth.

After brunch we went to Whole Foods, did you know that Whole Foods corporate office is in Austin, TX . Let me just tell you this is unlike any Whole Foods I’ve ever been to and of course made me wish even more then I already do that they would open one in Columbia. The whole purpose of stopping by Whole Foods was not to look around even though we did, but to pick up some stuff to take to a friends house who was having a get together to celebrate recently being single and to watch the UT football game of course. Although it was a little overwhelming being in a house full of people you don’t know, I had so much fun talking to friends of Ellie’s and experiencing life in Austin.

We left before the game was over and before the party really got started because we had plans with Ellie’s roommate, Meg to celebrate her birthday. Meg spent her birthday sky diving with her friend Holly; they both survived of course and had an incredible experience which they say they would do again! We went to Perla’s for dinner, absolutely delicious. Ellie and I shared the Ahi Tuna which was unbelievably good. The atmosphere at Perla’s was very distinguished. After dinner we went to a bar down the street and sat at a table outside. We all enjoyed one another’s company while celebrating the last hours of Meg’s birthday.

Sunday morning we woke up earlier and went for a walk around the lake. It was so neat to see everyone out exercising with their dogs. That is one thing I noticed about Austin , it seems to be a very dog friendly city, which I of course thought was neat! After our morning workout, Ellie took me to Torchy’s Tacos an eatery in a trailer park (not a real trailer park, a trailer park full of eateries). Torchy’s is known for their tacos and of course did not disappoint. As I was eating all this amazing Mexican food all I could think about was Thomas and how he would be in heaven. To say Thomas loves Mexican food is an understatement!


After lunch we went to went in and out of the shops along South Congress Street or SoCo as the locals call it. Darling shops with so many neat things, we found Ellie two purses and two pairs of shoes and I didn’t spend a dime!

How crazy are their street lights? I've never seen any thing like them before!

On our way home I asked Ellie if we could go to Anthropologie, one of my favorite stores, but unfortunately they don’t have a store in Columbia , so whenever I go out of town I always try and find one. Our afternoon of shopping wore us out, so we headed home and relaxed for a little before we got ready for my last night in Austin, tear.

Ellie made reservations at Justine’s a fabulous restaurant on the East side of Austin . The restaurant was so quaint and charming; I fell in love the minute we pulled up. We shared a salad and an entrée of scallops for dinner, so we could order dessert. The chocolate pear tart, or whatever it was called because I just made that up, was absolutely divine. I still wanted more after the last bite, isn’t that always the case? It is for me at least. After dinner met up with some of Ellie’s tennis friends at a fairly new bar called Clive’s, yet again great atmosphere and we were able to enjoy sitting outside. I thought it was time to head home but Ellie had a different idea. She told me we had to stop at some wild and crazy bar (that’s my description) because it was packed in everyone in there seemed wasted, but we grabbed one drink each, made a couple rounds around the place and then left. That was an Austin experience in itself!

Before I left on Monday afternoon Ellie took me to Walton’s, Sandra Bullock’s lunch restaurant. Can we talk about how darling this place is? Inside was like a breath of fresh air. It was a completely different feel then the rest of Austin , so much so it reminded me a lot of fabulous lunch spots in Columbia or Charleston . Lunch was absolutely delicious and Ellie surprised us with two amazing desserts!

My long weekend in Austin was unbelievable, I had so much fun with Ellie as I always do! I hope to plan another trip to see her again soon, may be this time we will meet in Seattle, Idaho, San Fran? The possibilities are endless!

It's Finally Here!

I can't believe it's that time of year again, but I am so excited because the arrival of football season means Fall is not far behind! I love my Carolina Gamecocks and I have been looking forward to the start of the season for several weeks now. A group of us in Columbia renewed our two tailgating spots again this year, which makes tailgating before the games lots of fun! Although, Thomas and I won't be going to the game tonight, we will of course be watching it on TV--USC vs. Southern Miss at 7:30pm on ESPN!

Eat Pray Love

I can't quite remember, but I would say it was close to two years ago that I first picked up Eat, Pray, Love. This was around the time when its popularity soared through the roof. I really enjoyed the first part of the story where Liz discovers herself in Italy. I spent a semester abroad in college studying in Florence, Italy and it was so neat to read this part of the book and be able to picture myself back in Italy. It was about half way through the pray section when the story just wasn't moving fast enough to keep my interest. In fact, it was moving so slow, it was boring me to death. So as I am sure you can guess I never was able to finish the pray section in order to make it to the love part of the story and therefore never finished the book. However, my terrible attempt at reading the book didn't stop me from seeing the movie!

Last night I went to dinner with my friend Katie and afterwards we went to see the 7:30pm showing of Eat Pray Love. I think I can describe the movie in two words: slow and boring; unfortunately just like the book. If you are like me and had a hard time getting through the book, to the point where you didn't even finish it (I usually don't put down a book without finishing it) then you will feel the exact same way when you see the movie.

The movie wasn't a total disappointment, but it definitely isn't one I would recommend to my friends or sit down and watch time and time again. However, Julia Roberts was fantastic and the beautiful scenery of Bali was incredible.

I've never really been big on watching movies, but I definitely have a favorite, Father of the Bride, which I could watch over and over and over again! Speaking of movies, I went to see Sex and the City 2 after work this evening with some of my girlfriends. It was A-MAZ-ING!

If you are like me and never really watched season after season of the show, but would catch an episode here and there every once in awhile, I promise you will still love the movie! If nothing else you will admire the wardrobe of the entire cast!

So ladies, if you are looking for something to do this Memorial Day weekend with a girlfriend or a group of girlfriends, your mom and/or sister, go grab a ticket to SATC2, you will enjoy every minute of it!
